Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks Winchell is a great guy and
provides awesome resources.
The Evil Dr. Ganymede link someone posted was pretty good too. It shows a
lot of the problems in the current star data versus what was on the 2300 AD
I think one interesting effort would be to try to use only real stars and
to preserve as much of the old Colonial Atlas descriptions while doing
whatever makes sense to re-align the fingers/arms to make sense with the
stutterwarp limits. If the newer data has proved a number of the links
fairly far out on length vs. the 7.7 ly limit, that might suggest a few
corrections as Dr. Ganymede pointed out.
On the other hand, the totally contrived systems could be replaced with
real systems and hopefully with some judicious jigging, we could come up
with a 'real space 2300 map' that preserves the arm/finger relationships
and only uses modern star data on real stars.
Still, that's a bit of work...
