The actual settings depend on the bitmap. The color values range from 0 to
255, representing the level of color in the black and white image (black
being 0, white being 255). if you put in 0 for sea level, all the black
areas on the bitmap will be water. Then tell the program what elevation
255 (white in your bitmap) equals, in meters. All areas that are white are
set to that elevation. All other values between 0 and 255 on the bitmap
then have their elevations set according the values you selected.
So best to play around with the numbers, and adding shades of gray to
adjust the elevation. Do a google images search for 'grayscale heightmap',
which should return many examples of such map images.
