It's definately the system detail (planets, moons, and everything else). I
made a sector today with 60,000 systems... but it had 1.6 million bodies in
total. Ended up being a 600meg .astrodb file.
Astro normally only loads the 'root' system information so that it can
generate the 3d map. The detailed system information is not loaded from
the database file untill you select a system (or possibly, search). The
exception to this is on the initial generation, where everything is kept in
memory unless you give it a file name to use per my other email. So very
large sectors can quickly gobble up more than 2gb of ram during generation
(which, as a 32bit app, is about its upper limit). But, once the file is
saved, most of that gets unloaded from memory.
