I haven't checked FM8, but most Windows software depends on information
stored on the Windows registry.
If this is not the case, then you should be able to do as you say.
If indeed FM8 depends on registry information, then you'll need to either
have that information ready in a .reg file to add it to every computer
where you run it. An alternative (which would also work better, though it's
really expensive) would be to create a portable version using something
like VMWare ThinApp.
I'd say you give your method a try, else consider something like ThinApp.
