Re: [nbos] Star Chart Base Data Release.

I found my copy of "MySQL" and have installed it. However, it is like
looking at the Vulcan Star Maps in Mendel's book - obviously VERY
interesting but I don't have any knowledge that assists me in understanding
what I'm looking at.

The programme seems to want me to connect to some kind of server but I
haven't a clue which server or what I should do when I get there (wherever
"there" might be).

I'm not looking for a teach-in on MySQL; I think I have got where I need to
be by using Excel but, one day, I'll try to work out what to do with "MySQL"
:-)

Cheers,

Mike

This is a SQL script. Assuming that the table definition is in the script
(it would start "Create Table starchart") then just about any database
program would work. I'd recommend Sql Express from Microsoft, it's free. But
It does require some "Techie stuff".

Hi Rob:

I tried to open the sql file in Access but got an "unrecognizable database
format" error message (I am using Office 2003, by the way). I have no idea
what MySQL or MS sql are, although I assume they are database programmes of
some kind. Having looked at your file in Note Pad, it appears to be a csv
file which, I think should be readable by Excel and, indeed, Excel takes it
on board but gives an error message that "the complete file was not loaded"
whatever that means.

I then tried to import the file to Excel as a comma delimited (csv) file and
was told there was too much data for a single sheet. However, I persevered
and imported as much as an Excel sheet would take. The last line on the
sheet read

"INSERT INTO `starchart` VALUES (65486 'Star' '65485' '90846'
'342500' '' '' '' '' '18.53253685'
'22.41176718' '561.7977528' '1832.359551' '1693.957313'
'277.9880528' '235.40350' '-1677.52096' '698.60586' '8.83'
'77.11875245' '2.963398105' '0.08' 'M2' '1.724');"

So I now have to determine what more needs to be imported and then, I think,
I can use the spreadsheet as a Kepner file to import into AS2.

By the way, a few years ago, a friend gave me a disk which purports to hold
MySQL. If I install this, will it allow me to use your file direct or will I
have to do lots more tecchie type things to make it all work?

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,

If I'm not wrong with out needing an actual MySql or MS sql databse you can
use Microsoft access to import the file.

Hi Rob:

As you probably recall, I'm no tecchie. I'd love to have a look at what
you've been doing (I've just offered up my Star Trek sector map on DropBox
and am looking at doing a Star Trek RPG soon using the Last Unicorn rules)
but I have no idea how to read your "SQL Dump" file.

Can I read the data into MS Excel as a csv file, or into Access or can you
suggest a piece of software I can use to produce something that will load
into AS2?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi guys,

After some careful thought and everything into if I was feeling nice or not,
I've decided to actually be nice and release the actual core database for
the Star Chart data that I did for Astro 2.

Please be warned that this is a SQL file dump, you will need to be able to
read SQL into what ever program you attempt to look at it with on the other
hand it does include all of the following fields which help if you are
trying to work out where I got the data etc from I've added some comments in
here ;)

id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, ---- this is just the id in the
case of this 1 - 87476
`sys` varchar(10) NOT NULL default 'star', ----- This defaults to Star
because that's what these are in Astro
`starid` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', --- Same as Id really but for
Astro rather then the database.
`hip` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', ---- this is the Hip catalog
number
`hd` varchar(30) default NULL, -- this is the HD catalog number
`hr` varchar(30) default NULL, --- This is the HR catalog number
`gliese` varchar(20) default NULL, -- This is the Gliese Catalog number
`bayerflamsteed` varchar(20) default NULL, -- This is the Bayerflamsteed
catalog number
`commonname` varchar(100) default NULL, -- This is the common name where
avalible.
`RA` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- This is the Right Ascession
Data as listed in the catalogs.
`DEC` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- This is the Declination as
listed in the catalogs.
`DISPar` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- this is the calculated
distance in Parsec
`DISLY` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- This is the calculated
distance in Light years.
`R` varchar(30) default NULL, -- I honestly can't remember obviously
something I used to calculate junk
`e` varchar(30) default NULL, -- I honestly can't remember obviously
something I used to calculate junk
`x` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- X co-ord from Sol
`y` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- Y Co-ord from Sol
`z` varchar(30) NOT NULL default '0', -- Z co-ord from Sol.
`mag` varchar(30) default NULL, -- Star Magnitude
`lum` varchar(30) default NULL, -- Star Lum
`mass` varchar(30) default NULL, -- Star Mass
`absmag` varchar(30) default NULL, -- Absolute Magnitude
`spect` varchar(50) default NULL, -- Spectral Type
`colindex` varchar(30) default NULL, -- Color index

You can dl the dump of this at

http://www.star-fleet.org/downloads/starchart.sql.zip

All I ask is if you use it that you please at least give me some credit for
the work I put into doing it.

Regards

Rob.
