I seem to have cured my problem by pasting a copy of gdiplus.dll into
the FM8 directory. This was suggested by Ed.

As discussed in the thread on Wine's AppDB page for FM8,
(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10813)
there seems to be a problem with the Battlemap symbols when placed on
some bitmap backgrounds. This got to be some kind of Wine bug, and
I've now filed a report about it
(http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19254).
