The actual surface map images are stored in the sector file.

If you use the 'edit surface map' option (as opposed to just 'create
surface map'), that creates a seperate .fwe file that can be edited with
Fractal World Explorer located in '/Planets' under Astro2's directory. So
if you're actually editing planet maps with FWE, you'll want to copy those
over as well.
