My project is exactly to turn Geoffrey Mandel's charts into an AS map -
for a client. It is a bit like the Herculean task of cleaning the Aegean
stables. Star Trek and Mr Mandel seem to have thought in two dimensions
despite their system of quadrants, sub-quadrants, blocks, sectors and
the rest. I think you're right about the period the charts cover but
that saw the greatest "rationalising" of the Star Trek background.
When you look at how they show the Romulan, Klingon and UFP regions of
space - especially as defined by the neutral and demilitarized zones -
they make little sense placed in a 3D environment. However, my task
doesn't require me to indicate the 20 lt yr sectors, except for the
eight that have Sol at their centre (Mandel p18 & 19). Furhtermore, when
these are accurately placed, the stars listed by Mandel as in certain of
these sectors are, in a number of cases, not in the sector indicated.
Finally, the star systems identified in Mandel's charts only by the Star
Trek name (e.g. Bajor, Cardassia, Romulus, Qo'nos - the Klingon
homeworld, etc.) can not be linked to any real stars. They are given no
star catalogue reference or distance in light years from any
pre-determined point. Placing them in an AS map is, therefore, an
extremely uncertain proposition.
I am therefore having to use a lot of imagination; but it's fun :-)

I don't know if you can get a copy of it or not, but you might want to
Star Trek Star Charts by Geoffrey Mandel to your reference works.
Starting at page 12 it gives the basic physical structure of the
System (the Alpha/Beta/Gamma,Delta Quadrants are 10,000x10,000ly boxes,
basically 5x5 boxes of 100,000ly space when viewed from above.)
Page 14, 15, 16 define the Subquadrent Designation, the Sector Zone, the
Sector Grid, the Sector Quad, the Sector Blocks and ending in Sectors.
Apparently the proper description for describing a Systems is Alpha
Quadrent-1-5-12-65-659-13 (Alpha Quadrant, Subquadrent 1, Sector Zone 5,
Sector Grid 12, Sector Quad 65, Sector Block 659, Sector 13. The last
But it seems to be for the TNG/DS9/Voy era. If yours is in the Original
Era it might be different. I'm just glad I'm doing FASA's.
