I think these files have all of the star data from 2300AD including the Kafer Sphere. However, its not in a very nice format. You'll want to write a script to turn it into an AS3/AS2 compatible input file.

The data format (I had to go back to my PASCAL source code from 1990) is:

gilese number, starname

x,y,z, spectral class

magnitude, number of companions

(if there are companions)

          Companion Name

Gilese number, magnitude, radius, mass, luminosity, temperature

          orbit, spectral class

radius, mass, luminosity, temperature

blank line

Note the data is NOT separated by commas.

5680.0 Ross 52
-22.8 -21.2 13.6 M56
11.5 1
Ross 52 B
56680.1 12.1 0.35 0.33 0.007 2800.0
4.0 M5V
0.10 0.10 0.002 2900.0

I have more files, but I haven't looked at them in over 20 years (except what I just did to find these files), I can zip them up and send them to anyone who wants them, but I don't have web hosting space to put them up for anonymous download. If they do not come through the list, and you want them, let me know and I can email them to you directly (Mike you are CC'ed and should get the files).

If I were not busy right now, I would go ahead an write a script to update the files to AS format myself.

Don't
do that. I have the 2300AD near star list around here someplace.  Let me
look around and get back to you. I had a lot of time in college.

2300
uses a slightly modified version of the gliese number. It also used the gleise
2 catalogue (gliese 3 came out after the game).
There
were a couple of errors in the Near
Star List. Furthermore, GDW didn't use any particular coordinate system for the
data. They spun it round in Macspin until none of the stars overlapped.
I
looked into using an established catalogue (gliese 2 being the obvious one) to
use in astrosynthesis for 2300ad, but the problems were great enough that I
decided it was easier to manually type the near star list into a spreadsheet
manually.
I'm
about halfway through that, I think.

I've just resurrected an earlier project to produce an AS3 map of
the real universe to 50 light years out from Sol for Traveller 2300AD (T2300).
I am using the Kepner_50lyr_stars CSV files provided very kindly by a member of
these lists as the sector file and endeavouring to identify the star systems
from the Near Star List provided with the T2300 game.

I have two problems for which I am seeking help:

1.      The Game uses the old Gliese Star
Catalogue to identify the systems but the Kepner file uses Hipparcos, Henry
Draper and other catalogues. I can’t find a means of marrying the various
catalogue references.
2.      When I try to use the Search facility in
AS3 to locate systems by the catalogue number, it returns an error message:
‘Unknown search term near “ hd” ‘ (for the Henry Draper catalogue numbers).

Can anyone please offer some suggestions as to how I can resolve
these issues? If I can get the project finished, I’ll put it up for other
members to download (which I had promised to do when I first embarked on the
project 4 or 5 years ago. I think Doug Jesse and Roland Volz had expressed an
interest at that time.
