If I can manage to put RL aside long enough to be able to focus on the tools
and complete them, I will let you know when I finish. I'm writing them in
VBasic and I'm trying to make something to handle all my reffing needs; not
only Traveller, but D&D, CoC, Star Trek, Paranoia, Flashing Blades - bunch
o' stuff.

Though, right now, I'm trying to focus on T2300.

I'd certainly be interested in whatever you can come up with on the
Traveller reffing front. I wrote a whole suite of game aids for the Atari ST
in GFA Basic and, a few years back, tried to emulate this in Visual Basic
for Windows. Other priorities intervened (like work!) and I had to shelve

I'm not great with databases and tend to shy away from them but I'll have to
overcome that and get with it. Did you see my posting about the AS3 version
of the T2300 Near Star List (evildrganymede)? This guy claims to have
produced it and his work looks pretty impressive. I haven't had a chance to
go through it in detail but the site is worth a visit:

GDW used a modified Gliese number; the ones they provide in their Near Star
List are a factor of 10 greater than the real Gliese number. I.e., GDW's
GL4510 is actually GL451.

However, a lot of the stars are in any catalog and even the GDW source code
identifies some of them as probably fictional. I've been working on an AS
catalog of the Near Star List for some time, trying to match all of the
stars to real world entities. I found a catalog of about 118,000 stars and
mapped the majority of the NSL to them. Also, since the catalog contains
proper motions, I've corrected for each star's actual location, not
apparent, based upon their distance from Sol.

But, there are a lot of multiples and I've been trying to weed them out to
get them properly accounted for.

AS's search routine takes forever on this file. AS2 was faster, but AS3
changed how it did searches and my system bogs down to a crawl on anything
as large as 118,000 records. So, I've been doing most of the work in Excel
and SQL Express. It's been on hiatus for over a year when I taught high
school physics - spare time is a rare and wonderful thing when teaching -
and I'm working on getting back to it, along with creating reffing support
tools for Traveller. If I get a finished product, I'll see if it can be
posted online.

I've just resurrected an earlier project to produce an AS3 map of the real
universe to 50 light years out from Sol for Traveller 2300AD (T2300). I am
using the Kepner_50lyr_stars CSV files provided very kindly by a member of
these lists as the sector file and endeavouring to identify the star systems
from the Near Star List provided with the T2300 game.

I have two problems for which I am seeking help:

1. The Game uses the old Gliese Star Catalogue to identify the systems
but the Kepner file uses Hipparcos, Henry Draper and other catalogues. I
can't find a means of marrying the various catalogue references.

2. When I try to use the Search facility in AS3 to locate systems by
the catalogue number, it returns an error message: 'Unknown search term near
" hd" ' (for the Henry Draper catalogue numbers).

Can anyone please offer some suggestions as to how I can resolve these
issues? If I can get the project finished, I'll put it up for other members
to download (which I had promised to do when I first embarked on the project
4 or 5 years ago. I think Doug Jesse and Roland Volz had expressed an
interest at that time.
