Re: [nbos] First impressions of AS3 with a netbook.

It doesn't sound quite the same. AS3 has always run fine on Windows XP
Pro for me, ever since the initial Beta version. There have been odd
things crop up during the development but Ed has resolved these with
subsequent versions. I won't switch to W7 because there is no need; XP
works well and I'm not made of money.

The problem I experienced was running AS3 on a Linux OS, using a
Windows emulator called "Wine". This treats picture files somewhat
differently from Windows and I suspect that may be where the problem
lies - it usually arises when I try to look at the details of a planet
in the System Data panel.

Mike,

I ran AS2.01 last night on my new Windows 7 system and when I selected
the
first system and clicked on the + to expand the first planet the whole
program froze for a second or two and I thought it was going to bomb,
but it
did come back. This never happened on Windows XP. This was on a sector
that
I had created and populated a while ago on the previous computer.

I wonder if there is a relationship to what you ran into with what I ran
into?

I have a Toshiba NB100 running Ubuntu Linux 11.10 and have been doing
some tests trying to get AS3 to run under the Wine Windows emulator.
Everything seems to be OK until I try to access the System Data details
on the side panel - the whole thing then crashes and my notebook
re-boots.

I presume you're running a Windows OS but maybe you could confirm and,
if not, let me know what OS you have. This might give me some clues as
to what to do.

I also plan to visit the Wine Forum to raise a question and see what joy
I get.

Cheers,

After not reading much on the list about how AS3 works on netbooks I
decided to take a gamble and see what happened if I tried it myself. I
have to say I'm *REALLY* impressed with how it works on an earlier model
netbook (Asus EeePC 1000H). I wouldn't say it flies (the opening spin
of the map chugs a bit) but it's not moving at a crawl by a long shot,
and I love how multiple star systems are rendered now. "Nifty" as a
descriptive barely begins to cover just how good this program is. :)
