You can make a "2d" map, but if all you want is the appearance of 2d then Alan has the right of it. Otherwise, set your sector height to 1 LY (you could try setting it to a fraction of 1, say .5 or .25 LY, I personally haven't tried that yet) and you will generate a roughly flat sector.

Hello Mark,
As far as I know, the only way to currently flatten a map to 2D
would be to choose to export it as a graphic. However, this has given
me an idea and I might be able to write a plugin that would allow you
to switch a map between a 2D and 3D view. I have a few other things
on my plate right now but I'll give it a try when I get some free
time.
