That is simplicity itself. Draw a circle. Draw diameter lines to divide
the staircase into steps. Fill the first step with black, the next with
95% gray, the next with 90% gray, etc. In the 3D program (such as
Bryce, or Terragin) create a terrain. Use the monochromatic circle
(created above) as the height map. Add material texture map (i.e. for a
wooden spiral staircase.)
