i'll use the script to create an x3d file. (x3d is eXtensible 3d, the successor to VRML)
Probably use a default x3d and replace elements

it would basically be a 3d scene of a rotating sphere with a light showing on it
then i could get the stars color for the light
and the stars intensity for the light
change the size of the sphere depending on the planet size
change the rotation based on the planet rotation
apply the .png as it's texture
do whatever other nifty things i can think of(rings?)
write it out to the new x3d file

Then with an appropriate plugin(flux player, is free and works well) downloaded. you create a webpage with that x3d <embed>ed and you have twirly planet.

I'd probable make it write a simple html file at the same time that you could link to or whatever. Maybe get even crazier with Version 2.

How about a script that exports the surface maps and creates an x3d file of a lighted 3d rotating globe using that texture. You could embed them in a webpage pretty easy.

I've allready got the export testure half done....just recently... ;)

I know :) I took a seriously hard look at this also. I wrote the bulk surface map exporter and went round & round trying to get the .planetview.pngs out.... to no avail.

That x3d idea.... has merit. Care to elaborate?
