I used the Fractal Polyline or Fractal Polygon tools to do the tracing. I
found that setting the fractal factor to 2 or 3 gave decent results,
depending on how closely you traced the scanned image. I'm a bit of a
perfectionist, so I tend to zoom way in and try to place points to match the
scan almost exactly.

Which tool I used depends on how long the coastline is. In FM7 these tools
had a limit of 255 nodes (IIRC), so the Polygon tool would suddenly refuse
to go any further and I'd have to "close" it at that point. Which required
some surgery afterwards to sew together multiple polygons. That led me to
use the Fractal Polyline tool for 'big' continents and then merge the line
segments, and then clone the merged line segments to a Polygon afterward.
Note that this would only work if I used Proximity Snap or similar when
starting a new line to ensure it started exactly on the end-point of the
previous line.

Also, make sure to set the fractal factor of all lines to 0 before merging
or cloning lines/polygons, or you get all the intermediate points in your
merged lines. You can set the fractal factor back to 3 (or whatever) after
you have the outline you want.

I used the past-tense above because FM8 may have fixed some of these
restrictions... but I haven't tested it yet.. The node limit might be
different, or you may be able to turn on Proximity Snap and have it work
when you are *moving* points, not just when you first place them. Either of
these would make it easier to draw large continents.

P.S. I'd love there to be a 'trace outline' tool in FM, similar to the tools
you find in things like Photoshop, but given the complexity of those
algorithms I'm not expecting it anytime soon. If Ed manages to conjure it
up, great! In the meantime, I think we'll be manually tracing. If anybody
has a workaround for auto-tracing, please post it.

a scanned continent into FM8, please? It's the first time I've tried to use
this method of producing a map in FM8.
